The MAAC tournament quarterfinals resume today with four games; The #1 Iona Gaels against #8 Siena Saints, the #4 Monmouth Hawks against #5 Canisius Griffins, the #2 Rider Broncs against #7 St. Peter’s Peacocks and the #3 Manhattan Jaspers against #11 Marist Red Foxes. In my opinion, the Iona Gaels are by far the better team in this conference, hence the 17-3 record in conference play. The Gaels are a high scoring, high octane type team and it’s really fun basketball to watch. The problem lies defensively, as they are one of the worst team in the nation in points allowed. Regardless, there are few teams in the MAAC that have exploited their inabilities, as the Gaels usually put up too many points for the opposition to catch up.
Obviously my pick is the Iona Gaels, but I will say that Rider Broncs are a must watch team as well, but were quickly out my running when they fell to the Niagara Purple Eagles at home. The Gaels are led by four double digit scorers in David Laury (20.1 ppg), A.J. English (19.5), Schadrac Casimir (15.2 ppg) and Isiah Williams (13.5 ppg). Only Laury is a senior, so expect the Gaels to be right back at it next year. Anyways, if the Gaels can find away to sharpen their defensive woes, they could be a sleeper in the NCAA tournament, of course pending they win the MAAC tournament. It’s been 2013 since the Gaels last punched their ticket into the big dance, so they must be aching to give it another try.
