The Atlantic 10 (odd considering their are 14 teams) first round begins today with a pair of games. The 12th seeded Fordham Rams will welcome the 13th seeded George Mason Patriots to Brooklyn, which should be considered a semi-home game for the Rams. The Rams have also defeated the Patriots on the road, in their only other meeting this season. The winner will play the free falling 5th seeded VCU Rams. The other contest features the #11 Duquesne Dukes against the #14 St. Louis Billikens. The Dukes caught a second wind towards the end of the season, winning 3 of their last 5 games including a win over the 2nd seeded Dayton Flyers. The Billikens will like to try and forget this season, as they are a far cry of the team they were the past few years. The winner will go on to play the George Washington Colonials.
As for a prediction, I really like the Davidson Wildcats. I know they are the top seeded team in the Atlantic 10 tournament, but they are much better than just that. This team regardless of the outcome is going to be in the NCAA tournament and do some damage in it. Statistically they offensive juggernauts, as they are ranked 4th in the nation in points per game (80.6), 3rd in assist per game (17.4) and 28th in field goal percentage (.476). The Wildcats have a few head scratching losses, but erased that with 9 straight wins. Take the consistent Davidson Wildcats in a tough Atlantic 10 tournament.
