Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Predictions

The Ohio Valley Conference Tournament begins today with a pair of games. In the Ohio Valley, it pays to finish either number one or two in conference, as you don’t play until the semifinals. They bypass the opening and quarterfinal rounds and only have to win once to get into the finals. It’s unique and makes conference play that more important for teams. However, the Ohio Valley Conference stings for me a bit, as last year’s Murray St. Racers debacle just plain ole sucked. The Racers had won 25 straight games and in the finals fell to a last second three by the Belmont Bruins. The Racers weren’t invited as an At-large to the NCAA Tournament, which I wasn’t too pleased with. They had an unbelievably talented team of pure scorers and could hang in my opinion with most teams in that tournament, but their lack of quality wins killed them. Anyways, enough of that talk. The Ohio Valley Conference Tournament schedule are as follows…

Opening Round: March 2 (OVC Digital Network)
Game 1: No. 8 Austin Peay Governors vs. No. 5 Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles
Game 2: No. 7 Eastern Illinois Panthers vs. No. 6 Murray State Racers

Quarterfinals: March 3 (OVC Digital Network)
Game 3: Winner Game 1 vs. No. 4 Tennessee State Tigers
Game 4: Winner Game 2 vs. No. 3 Morehead State Eagles

Semifinals: March 4 (ESPNU)
Game 5: Winner Game 3 vs. No. 1
Belmont Bruins

Game 6: Winner Game 4 vs. No. 2 UT Martin Skyhawks

Championship: March 5 (ESPN2)
Game 7: Winner Game 5 vs. Winner Game 6

Prediction: I actually think that a few teams can win here, as no one team was dominant this year in the Ohio Valley Conference. However, I’m going to have to side with the Belmont Bruins to repeat. It’s another safe pick, given their road to the finals and the fact that they are the number one team in the conference. It just seems that Belmont Bruins have the offensive ability every year to put up tons of points. They’ve beaten the Marquette Golden Eagles on the road and the Valparaiso Crusaders at home, which are teams that are better than anyone in the division in my opinion. The only worry I have, is that they are 4-4 in their last eight games and aren’t rolling into the tournament with momentum. Again though, the other teams have to beat themselves up just to get to the Bruins, who will be fresh. So, with that I got the Belmont Bruins representing the Ohio Valley Conference in the NCAA Tournament!
