Southern Conference Tournament Predictions

The Southern Conference Tournament starts up today with a few games on slate. The No. 9 VMI Keydets take on the No. 8 Samford Bulldogs, while the No. 10 The Citadel Bulldogs faces off against the  No. 7 Mercer Bears. I kind of wish they would of just paired up the Keydets and Bulldogs for another high scoring and no defense type of game. I mean, they combined for 206 points on February 27th. It was the Bulldogs 19th time they allowed 90 points or more this season, in only 31 games. The Mercer Bears should be able to handle them, but then again, they’ve had their own issues as well. The Bears had a record of 18-6 (8-3 conference), but out of the blue dropped their final seven games. Anyways, the Southern Conference Tournament are as follows…

Opening Round: March 4 (ESPN3)
Game 1: No. 9 VMI Keydets vs. No. 8 Samford Bulldogs
Game 2: No. 10 The Citadel Bulldogs vs. No. 7 Mercer Bears

Quarterfinals: March 5 (ESPN3)
Game 3: Winner Game 1 vs. No. 1 Chattanooga Mocs
Game 4: No. 5 Western Carolina Catamounts vs. No. 4 Wofford Terriers
Game 5: Winner Game 2 vs. No. 2 East Tennessee St. Buccaneers
Game 6: No. 6 UNC Greensboro Spartans vs. No. 3 Furman Paladins

Semifinals: March 6 (ESPN3)
Game 7: Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4
Game 8: Winner Game 5 vs. Winner Game 6

Championship: March 7 (ESPN2)
Game 9: Winner Game 7 vs. Winner Game 8

Prediction: I’m all about the Chattanooga Mocs winning the Southern Conference Tournament. The Mocs are a very talented team and I even considered them as an At-large at one point. Their recent stumbles have since squashed that belief and kind of worry me a bit. Anytime you lose to the Western Illinois Catamounts who you dismantled by 19 points in the previous matchup and drop a home game by 15 points to the UNC Greensboro Spartans, it should be considered a red flag. However, I’m going to chalk those games up as bad days and hope the team that beat the Dayton Flyers returns to form for the tournament. The Mocs have the potential to be a Cinderella squad, which is why I can’t root against them…Go Mocs!
