Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Prediction

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament begins today, in what should produce a “Play-in” NCAA Tournament team. If you are looking for the deepest pits of Division I, well it’s certainly this conference. I mean, out of the thirteen teams in the MEAC, only three of them had overall record over .500%. Charles Barkley would call that “Turrible”. Anyways, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament schedule are as follows…

Opening Round: March 7 (ESPN3)
Game 4: No. 12 Delaware State Hornets vs. No. 5 Savannah State Tigers
Game 5: No. 11 Coppin State Eagles vs. No. 6 North Carolina A&T Aggies

Opening Round: March 8 (ESPN3)
Game 8: No. 9 Morgan State Bears vs. No. 8 UMES Fighting Hawks
Game 9: No 10 Howard Bison vs. No. 7 North Carolina Central Eagles

Quarterfinals: March 9 (ESPN3)
Game 12: Winner Game 8 vs. No. 1 Hampton Pirates
Game 13: Winner Game 9 vs. No. 2 Norfolk State Spartans

Quarterfinals: March 10 (ESPN3)
Game 16: Winner Game 5 vs. No. 3 South Carolina State Bulldogs
Game 17: Winner Game 4 vs. No. 4 Bethune-Cookman Wildcats

Semifinals: March 11 (ESPN3)
Game 20: Winner Game 17 vs. Winner Game 12
Game 21: Winner Game 16 vs. Winner Game 13

Championship: March 12 (ESPN2)
Game 22: Winner Game 21 vs. Winner Game 20

Prediction: I was inclined to go with the Hampton Pirates as they are the conference leader and had the more successful overall season than the other teams in the MEAC. I was actually leaning more so too because of how good they made me look when I picked them as a 15 seed over the 2 seeded Iowa Hawkeyes in 2001. However, I’m picking the Norfolk St. Spartans based on the sheer fact that their free throw percentage (77.9%) ranks number one in all of Division I. They also rank among the top 10 in steals and beat the one seeded Hampton Pirates in last game by 20 points. That’s good enough for me to side with the Spartans.
