Southland Conference Tournament Predictions

The Southland Conference Tournament is underway, as the No. 8 New Orleans Privateers currently are playing the No. 5 Southeastern Louisiana Lions. After that game, the No. 7 Nicholls Colonels play the No. 6 McNeese St. Cowboys. The Southland Conference Tournament has been cut down, as three teams are ineligible (Incarnate Word Cardinals,  Abilene Christian Wildcats and Central Arkansas Bears). The top two teams in the conference are automatically in the semifinals and obviously have the advantage in winning this. This format is what I like to call, “Two and In”. Anyways, the Southland Conference Tournament schedule are as follows…

Opening Round: March 9 (ESPN3)
Game 1: No. 8 New Orleans Privateers vs. No. 5 Southeastern Louisiana Lions
Game 2: No. 7 Nicholls Colonels vs. No. 6 McNeese State Cowboys

Quarterfinals: March 10 (ESPN3)
Game 3: Winner Game 1 vs. No. 4 Houston Baptist Huskies
Game 4: Winner Game 2 vs. No. 3 Sam Houston State Bearkats

Semifinals: March 11 (ESPN3)
Game 5: Winner Game 3 vs. No. 1 Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks
Game 6: Winner Game 4 vs. No. 2 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders

Championship: March 12 (ESPN2)
Game 7: Winner Game 5 vs. Winner Game 6

Prediction: While I think the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders have a shot, this tournament is undoubtedly the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks to lose. The Lumberjacks have won a nations best 18 games in a row. They are undefeated in conference play, which accounts for all those 18 wins a row. They’ve only two close games in conference, a five point win against the Islanders and a six point win against the Houston Baptist Huskies. Other than that, the next closest was ten points! The Lumberjacks have dominated the Southland Conference and there is no reason to believe that they don’t dominate this tournament too. Lock it in!
