American Athletic Conference Tournament Predictions

The American Athletic Conference Tournament begins with a pair of games on tap, as the No. 9 South Florida Bulls take on the No. 8 East Carolina Pirates and No. 10 Tulane Green Wave face the No. 7 Central Florida Knights. Unfortunately, the SMU Mustangs are ineligible for the postseason due to NCAA violations, so they won’t be in the AAC tournament. It’s a bummer for the program, as last year they were snubbed from the NCAA Tournament and this year, they were undoubtedly a lock. However, now the AAC tournament is now wide open, which is great for the several bubble teams. As far am I’m concerned, the only real lock in the AAC is the Cincinnati Bearcats. After that, the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes, Houston Cougars, Connecticut Huskies and Temple Owls are all on the bubble. So, this tournament is going to be vital for some team’s fate. Anyways, the American Athletic Conference Tournament schedule are as follows…

Opening Round: March 10 (ESPNU/EPSNEWS)
Game 1: No. 9 South Florida Bulls vs. No. 8 East Carolina Pirates
Game 2: No. 10 Tulane Green Wave vs. No. 7 UCF Knights

Quarterfinals: March 11 (ESPNU, ESPN2)
Game 3: Winner Game 1 vs. No. 1 Temple Owls
Game 4: No. 5 Connecticut Huskies vs. No. 4 Cincinnati Bearcats
Game 5: Winner Game 2 vs. No. 2 Houston Cougars
Game 6: No. 6 Memphis Tigers vs. No. 3 Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Semifinals: March 12 (ESPN2)
Game 7: Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4
Game 8: Winner Game 5 vs. Winner Game 6

Championship: March 13 (ESPN)
Game 9: Winner Game 7 vs. Winner Game 8

Prediction: The Temple Owls finished as the AAC conference leaders, which is pretty surprising, given they went 6-6 in their non-conference schedule.  Interestingly enough, if the Owls manage to beat the winner of the South Florida Bulls against East Carolina Pirates, they would have a third game against one of the two teams they swept (Connecticut Huskies, Cincinnati Bearcats). However, I’m not siding with the Owls or any of those teams. I’m going with the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes to win the AAC, as I feel they have an easier road to the finals. Like I mentioned, the Owls open with an easy game, but then have to face the Huskies or Bearcats. I’ll pass on that and take the Golden Hurricanes who open against the Memphis Tigers and then either face the Houston Cougars, Tulane Green Wave or Central Florida Knights. The Golden Hurricanes are a decent all around team, but they do need to a better job at the free throw line and from downtown. But, they are heading into this relatively hot, winning six of their last eight games and in that span have beaten the likes of the Houston Cougars, SMU Mustangs, Cincinnati Bearcats and Temple Owls. So, like I said, I predict the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes to win the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
